Chapter 2: Your Fiction is My Reality

The next thing I remember was opening my eyes and finding myself on my back staring at the ceiling. Was it all just a dream, I thought? Then I noticed two things: One, I was on the floor; two, that was not my ceiling.

I got up and examined my surroundings. I was in Yen Sid's from the Kingdom Hearts games. I didn't see the man himself, so I turned around to see if he was behind me. He wasn't, but I was far from alone. Four other people were on the floor, just starting to get up, two men and two women.

The first man was a giant; eight feet tall with a girth to match. He wore ill-fitting rags, and his dark hair was a tangled mess. His yellowish skin was cris-crossed with scars, almost as if he were stitched together out of random body parts.

The second man was only six foot four, and more slender. He also wore rags, albeit better fitting. His dark hair was long and flowing, as if despite being a hobo, he still had some vanity left. On his back was a well-used harp, and his right hand was bandaged. His face was unbelievably beautiful, and his grey eyes seemed to shine like stars. Most striking of all were his slightly pointed ears. Either he was a really good cosplayer, or I was looking at an Elf straight out of the works of Tolkien.

It took a bit of willpower, but I managed to turn my attention to the first woman, or rather, the teenage girl. She couldn't have been a day over fifteen. She also had dark, straight hair, styled into a high ponytail held in place with a blue scrunchie. Unusually for a Caucasian, she had almond-shaped eyes. Her outfit looked like it had come straight out of the early '90's.

The final person was perhaps the most striking of all. It was a geisha. An actual, honest-to-goodness geisha! Every detail was perfect: the hair, the iconic makeup, the kimono and obi, oh my gosh the kimono and obi. They were absolutely stunning. She couldn't have been more than five feet tall, making her look like a living doll.

Just then, I felt a hand tap my shoulder. I about went through the roof as I yelped and turned around. It was the Elf.

"Ani aspenë!" he said. "Mana esselya?" When I didn't respond, he asked "Ma hanyalyen?" as if he was confused as to why I didn't answer.

Of course I wasn't responding. He was speaking Quenya. And as much of a Tolkien geek as I am, I had yet to study Quenya in-depth.

Just then, the giant was up and speaking French. I might have taken French in high school, but I still couldn't make out what he was saying, especially with that weird accent.

Things got even more hectic when the teen started speaking... something Scandinavian, I couldn't tell which particular language. Then the geisha started speaking Japanese, but her small voice was soon drowned out by everyone else's. Especially the Elf and the giant. In fact, they looked like they were going to start fighting. I tried getting everyones attention, but to no avail. Just when the Elf drew a knife from his belt, a voice called out "Enough!" Everyone stopped and turned to the source: none other than Master Yen Sid himself, sitting at his desk.

"Master Yen Sid" I declared as I walked up to the desk and bowed. "What's going on? Why am I here? Why are they here? Who are they?"

Yen Sid raised his hand and said "All will be answered in due time, Jessica. Right now, I believe we have a more pressing matter that needs attending to." He then waved his hand. I was a bit confused, and not just because he knew my name. Was he casting a spell?

Just then, the giant spoke. "What was that all about?" he asked in suddenly perfect English.

"Ah" said the Elf. "So you do understand the High Elven tongue."

"I have no idea what that is" the giant replied. "Besides, we are both speaking French."

"No you're not" the teen interjected. "From where I stand, both of you are speaking Norwegian."

"That is impossible" said the geisha. "You are all speaking Japanese."

"Actually" I said "You're all speaking English. At least, that's what it sounds like to me. Yen Sid here probably cast a translation spell of some sort." I turned to him for confirmation.

"It is true" he said. " I am a sorcerer with many powers. The spell I cast will translate any language you hear into your native tongue."

This seemed to calm the group down, although the Elf tensed up at the word "sorcerer."

Yen Sid continued. "Now, I believe it is time to introduce ourselves to one another." He motioned towards the geisha, who timidly stepped forward.

She began. " I was born Sakamoto Chiyo in a little fishing village." Sounds normal enough, I thought, if a little old-fashioned. "When my mother died, my father sold my sister to a brothel and myself to a geisha house." Okay, this was sounding a lot like the beginning of Memoirs of a Geisha.

She continued. "After good fortune and hard work, I became a geisha myself and took on the name Nitta Sayuri."

No way, I thought. She did not just say that! There was no way she could possibly be Nitta Sayuri. Nitta Sayuri is a fictional character, while this woman was very real.

The teen decided to go next. "My name is Sophie Amundsen, and I was born in Norway, or so it seemed."

Great, I thought. First Sayuri, now Sophie form Sophie's World? What kind of joke was this?

She continued. "In reality, my entire life was the construct of a Norwegian UN observer who wanted to teach philosophy to his daughter for her birthday." Oh what a meta-fictional moment, I thought.

The Elf went next. "My father-name is Canafinwë, and my mother-name is Makalaurë, but among the Sindar, I was known as Maglor." My mind had no witty retort for this one, mainly because his voice was enchanting to listen to. "Long ago, I and my six brothers made an oath with our father that should never have been made. An oath that caused the suffering and deaths of many. Now it has left my hand with a pain that will not cease."

Such sorrow for his actions, I thought. Wait a minute. The Oath of Fëanor wasn't real. It was just made up by Tolkien for the back-story of Middle Earth.

The giant was the last to speak. "I have no name. I was not even truely born. I was created by a man named Victor von Frankenstein."

Called that one, I thought. How could he be anything but Frankenstein's creation?

"He promised me that he would create another creature like me to be my mate, but when he did not, I angrily destroyed all that he held dear. Now I wander the frozen north. Or at least I did until that strange flash of light brought me here."

"How strange" said the Elf. "I experienced such a light before I came here as well."

"So did I" said the geisha.

"Me four" the teen piped in.

"Shut up!" I yelled. "All of you, just... stop talking! This isn't real! None of you are real! You're just made-up people that only start talking to real people when they go insane! So if you don't mind, I'd like this psychotic break to end now!"

Needless to say, everyone was shocked by my outburst. They were also probably trying to wrap their heads around what I was saying. Especially "Sophie."

"You... believe you are going mad?" asked the Elf in confusion. "That all of us... are just illusions?"

"Well," I stammered, mostly because the way he was looking at me was making me feel self-conscious. "I-I hope not."

"They are not" Yen Sid said. He didn't seem too offended by my little outburst. He might have even expected it. "I believe you have yet to properly introduce yourself."

"Oh, right" I said as I turned back to the others. "Sorry about that. I've... had a lot of problems with delusions since I was 10, and I thought I was hallucinating when all this happened."

"My name is Jessica" I continued. "I'm currently living in Utah. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I'm 21 years old and..." I chose my next words carefully "...as far as my world is concerned, everyone else in this room is a fictional character. I guess this means my world is mistaken."

"You forgot to mention your Keyblade" Yen Sid added.

"Oh yeah, I did, didn't I?" I summoned my Keyblade merely by willing it to appear, which was beyond cool. Everyone save Yen Sid gave a startled gasp as it appeared in my hand.

Yen Sid continued. "And now it is time to learn of the enemies you will face on your journey." He then proceeded to explain to the others about Heartless and Nobodies. Me? To be honest, I did not pay any attention, mainly because this was all just rehashing of stuff I already knew. Also, no offense to Yen Sid, but he is not made for public speaking.

As he finished I asked "Umm... I get the whole fighting Heartless and Nobodies, but why them?" I pointed to the others behind me. "I mean, those two could probably take out a whole army of them without breaking a sweat" I said as I motioned to Maglor and the creature(who really needed a name) "But these two," I motioned to Sayuri and Sophie. " They aren't exactly elite warriors."

"Don't worry" Yen Sid assured me. "Magic can be a powerful weapon in it's own right." That assauged my fears. Sayuri and Sophie as mages actually made a lot of sense once I stopped to think about it. Still, there was one more question bugging me.

"Master Yen Sid?" I asked tentatively. "Why me? Why was I chosen to wield a Keyblade when there are probably so many others that could do the job better?"

Yen Sid sighed at this. "I honestly do not know. But this I do know." He stood up and said "None of you will be the same when this journey comes to an end. All of you will become better people. you will build friendships that will last through all eternity, and your fondest dreams will come true in ways you never expected."

I was awestruck by Yen Sid's words. I was hardly paying attention when he motioned us towards the room where the three good fairies were.

My fondest dreams come true, I thought? Did that mean I would become a noted thespian and singer? A mother of children that I actually gave birth to? A wife with the best husband in the world? And what did he mean by saying that they would come true in ways I never expected?

There was one thing I was sure of, though. This would be something I would never forget.
